Caving With Tim

Last Thursday, Tim and I decided to get lost.  Okay, maybe we didn’t decide to get lost but we did decide to go hiking.  Getting lost was just part of the excitement.  FYI, GS on iphones does not work  more that 1/2 from the road at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.  Suri deserted us!  And we left the map in the car.

When the trail guide indicates the trail is not marked well, it means it!  We did follow the “trail” we saw; we just weren’t sure where we were.  Landmarks in a lava bed are sort of hard find.  After we bushwhacked our way back, we talked to a ranger and found out that we did make it to where we had planned.  We just didn’t know it since it wasn’t marked.  “Yeah, you just sort of wander through the bush out there.”  A little disconcerting.

We did officially find the lava trees, Buffalo Cave, and the Great Rift.  Unofficially, we saw Cresent Butte, Coyote Butte, and Echo Canyon (our planned destination).  Also, we got to see the eclipse through a box the ranger had set out.  Oh, for those who have hiked with me before, we saw NO snakes!  Bonus!

Eight miles of lava bed hiking is a bit hard on old bodies!  Maybe something less exciting this Thursday.
